Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet to launch in October-end

Following several rumours that the release of Nokia's alleged Lumia 1520 has been delayed, we have the first indication of the possible launch of the device.

Pocket-Lint has reported that the Finnish handset maker may launch the rumoured 6-inch phablet at the end of October and the device can be expected to hit stores in November. The website cites a source and claims that the Nokia will be confirming details about the event soon, and the rumoured phablet will be released in the last week of October, the week starting October 21.

The site also notes that Nokia may not hold the launch even of the Lumia 1520 in the US, as thecompany launched its current flagship, the Nokia Lumia 1020 in New York back in July, and will probably prefer a different city this time.

Earlier on Monday, it was reported that Nokia had delayed the launch of its large-screen phablet, originally planned for late September, following the deal to sell its handset business and license patents to Microsoft.

Prior to this, we had been hearing that the alleged Lumia 1520 was slated for release on September 26, but a rumour claimed that the release date was rescheduled to October.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 has been rumoured to come with a 6-inch full-HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, a nano-SIM and a microSD card slot.

The press renders of the Nokia Lumia 1520 had already been leaked, revealing the homescreen featuring Live Tiles and the design largely resembled other phones in the Lumia family.

Previously, the rumoured Nokia Lumia 1520 was leaked in high quality images and was compared with a Sony Xperia smartphone.

World's smallest roadworthy car zooms to Guinness record

he world's smallest car - just 25 inches high and 4 feet long - which can be safely driven on the road has entered the Guinness World Records.

Custom car maker Austin Coulson in the US set the record as the owner of the smallest roadworthy car, which he can legally drive on the road.

"I've always wanted to have a Guinness World Records (title) for something and automotive was always my favourite," said Coulson.

"So I went home and looked up this current world record and thought, 'I could do that,'" he said.

Coulson's car measures 25 inches high; 2 feet, 1.75 inches wide; and 4 feet, 1.75 inches long, and can be spotted by its Texas vanity license plates reading "IM BIG".

To qualify as a roadworthy vehicle, Coulson needed to get the car registered and inspected and had to install a number of required safety features, according to Guinness website.

These included federally approved safety glass for the windshield, functioning windshield wipers and department of transportation-approved signal lights, a seat belt, and working horn.

"When I told my family I was going to try and get the world record for the smallest roadworthy car, they were a little sceptical at first," Coulson said.

"All along, the whole process, they kept questioning it. They knew I could build the car, they just didn't think I could get it legal," said Coulson.

Google acquires file-sharing app Bump

Google has reportedly acquired file-sharing app developer Bump for undisclosed financial terms.

Bump CEO David Lieb said that the company's apps, which also include a photo sharing service, Flock, will keep working for now.

The app, launched more than four years ago, allows users to share files by bumping devices together and Lieb has earlier claimed that the app was downloaded 125 million times, stuff.co.nz reports.

Meanwhile, Google said that the Bump team has demonstrated a strong ability to quickly build and develop products that users love and the company believes that they will be a great fit at Google.

More Facebook sharing linked with higher self-esteem

As they scroll through Facebook tonight, college students will be learning more about their friends than they might've expected, according to researchers at Pennsylvania State University.

Professor S. Shyam Sundar, co-director of Penn State's Media Effects Research Laboratory, determined that the information college students post on Facebook gives insight into their level of self esteem and feeling of self-worth.

After studying the Facebook habits of 225 South Korean university students, Sundar and his team concluded that people with low self esteem are most concerned with what others write about them on Facebook. People with high self-esteem spend more time cultivating their profiles and managing what information they present.

The study shows that they spend about the same amount of time on Facebook, but use their time in different ways. People with low self-esteem are more likely to monitor their Facebook walls, so that they can delete anything that they think portrays them in a bad light. People with high self esteem log on to post about themselves and add work and family information to their profiles.

Presented at the INTERACT 2013 conference in Cape Town, South Africa, the new study contradicts earlier studies that show that Facebook addicts are likely to have low self-esteem in general.

In 2012, researchers from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden surveyed 1,011 people with an average age of 32.6 years.

"Results showed that Facebook usage had a significant negative relationship with self-esteem," researchers said in the report. "In other words, the results indicated that users who spend more time on Facebook have lower self-esteem."

Other studies have linked Facebook usage withstress, depression, sadness and narcissism.

In 2011, researchers from Cornell University and Stanford University came down on opposite sides of the debate over Facebook's effect on self-esteem. Jeffrey Hancock of Cornell found that time on Facebook boosts self-esteem, while Alex Jordan of Stanford reported that Facebook negatively impacts feelings of self-worth.

As Facebook goes in and out of vogue, many self-proclaimed confident people have been known to say they don't need an account, they don't care about posting or don't care what others post about them. We've all heard a friend -- or a dozen friends -- talk about deactivating, because they just don't want people knowing so much about them, or they just don't care.

This latest PSU study does little to close the debate over whether Facebook boosts and debases self-esteem. It does not address people who have deactivated, or those who never created an account in the first place. It narrowly looks at college-aged students who use the site for social purposes and consider it part of everyday life.

By only looking at active Facebook users from one demographic, it is hard to say that the study can be applied to population as a whole. But when it comes to college students on the social network, the study concludes that the more they post, the more confidence they likely possess.

Game review: 'GTA V' triples the intensity

Los Angeles: I had such a fun weekend. After seeing a movie, I went down to the beach to ride the roller coaster on the pier and go jet skiing in the ocean. Afterward, I got a haircut and bought a new suit, and then I returned home to unwind with some fresh juice and a yoga session in my backyard. Later, I met up with one of my friends for drinks at a downtown watering hole. I live in Los Angeles, but I didn't do any of that stuff there. Nah, it all happened over the past 48 hours while visiting Los Santos, the virtual seaside metropolis cunningly depicted in "Grand Theft Auto V" (Rockstar Games, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99). Oh, did I mention I also committed dozens of felonies? 

For the most part, it's illegal business as usual in the latest edition of "Grand Theft Auto." There are vehicles to swipe, schemes to plan and banks to rob. Unlike previous installments in the wildly successful - and violent - M-rated series, "GTA V" centers not just on one but three criminal protagonists: former partners Michael and Trevor, and their new protege, Franklin. The urban areas don't feel quite dense enough when compared with Liberty City from 2008's "GTA IV." Nearly a decade after their last heist went terribly wrong, middle-aged Michael is living comfortably bored in witness protection in a ritzy Los Santos mansion, while the unhinged Trevor is dealing meth and smuggling guns on the outskirts of town in Blaine County. Meanwhile, Franklin is hustling on the streets as a repo man for an unsavory car dealership owner. The three men and their double- and triple-crossing ventures are ingeniously interwoven in both the narrative and gameplay of "GTA V," which allows players to almost seamlessly switch among Michael, Trevor and Franklin throughout the proceedings. With the tap of a few buttons, "GTA V" briskly sweeps across Los Santos from one anti-hero to another. During missions involving all three dudes, the flip-flopping is key to avoid getting wasted by the Los Santo Police. For instance, one particularly high-pressured holdup of an armored car involves swapping between Michael and Franklin blasting at waves of cops on the ground, and Trevor picking them off with a sniper rifle from a rooftop. It's not so much a gimmick as it is a flawless innovation on the established "GTA" formula. Besides the usual felonious shenanigans, there are leisurely diversions spread across Los Santos, including customizing rides, investing in the stock market, racing jet skis, watching TV, surfing spoof sites online, playing tennis and patronizing strip clubs. With an obsessive attention to detail, the city of Los Santos - last visited in 2004's "GTA: San Andreas" - and its outlying areas feel more alive than any virtual world I've ever visited. Rockstar Games has masterfully crafted a stunning make-believe take on modern Southern California that rivals the dragon-infested realm from "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim." However, this Los Santos is not a perfect clone of LA. The urban areas don't feel quite dense enough when compared with Liberty City from 2008's "GTA IV." And the rendition of Beverly Hills is basically across the street from downtown. Also, a few tired L.A. cliches - plastic surgery, seeking fame - are referenced so frequently the game almost veers into goofy "Saint's Row" territory. Fortunately, any shortcomings with "GTA V" feel about as important as a random stranger crossing the street in Los Santos. Rockstar Games has created such a fascinating place for Michael, Trevor and Franklin to explore and wreak havoc, I think you'll want to visit for more than a weekend. I know I do. Four stars out of four.

Samsung unveils Note 3 for Rs 49,900 in India

Samsung on Tuesday announced the launch of its Note 3 smartphone priced at Rs 49,900 for Indian markets.

Coming as the most expensive and high-end phone from the Korean mobile maker, Note 3 would have advanced S Pen which will not only enable user to make note on phone but also give access to various applications.

Weighing 168 gms, the Android-based 3 would have a 5.7 inch screen and 13 Megapixel camera.

The phone, which will be available in black, white and pink, has 3200 MAH battery which would give a back up of about 24 hrs.

Samsung will also bring into, India its first wearable water resistant computing device Galaxy Gear for Rs 22,990.

Both these products would be available for sale in India from September 25.

Customers would have the option to buy the Note 3 in monthly instalments spread over a year.

“The Galaxy Note 3 represents the whole new evolution of the Galaxy Note experience. We have not increased width of the screen, but have increased the size of display,” Samsung Country Head (Mobile & IT) Vineet Taneja said.

Note 3 would be available in 3G version in India.

The Gear would be compatible with most of the Samsung Galaxy devises and the 10.1 tablet which the company would launch in October, Samsung Mobile Director Manu Sharma said.

Samsung will make available both Note 3 and Gear in 100 stores in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Note 3 would have improved version of ‘Find My Mobile’ feature which will allow user to disable the phone when it is stolen or lost.

The KNOX would allow users to remotely track or erase the data from their lost or stolen Note 3 phone, Mr. Taneja said.

“Festival season is round the corner. So we will have buyback schemes for across portfolio.” he said.

Aircel offers local calling at 10 paise/min

NEW DELHI, SEPT 16:  

Telecom service provider Aircel on Monday said that it has slashed local calling rates by 90 per cent to offer local calling at 10 paise/min, the company said in a statement.

The company has launched two rate cutters – one priced at Rs 27 which offers all local calls at 10 paise/min for first 100 minutes and post that 40 paise/min with a validity for 21 days.

The second rate cutter is priced at Rs 11 which allows customers to make all local Aircel to Aircel calls at 10p/min with a validity of 15 days.

“The products will enable our customers to talk to their family and friends at low call rates. The products are especially aimed at the student community who like to be connected to their friends 24X7 and the rate cutters will provide them the ease and convenience to do so,” Anil Gupta, Regional Manager (North), Aircel, said.

The company strives to bring an element of ‘Extra’ in its products as a simple way to bring joy and happiness to its customers, he said.

GTA V pre-order delivery 'delayed' on Flipkart

Flipkart's customers who pre-ordered GTA V, and were expecting their copies to arrive on launch day Tuesday, September 17, will be bitterly disappointed, as the Indian online retailer has informed them by email that the games will be only shipped from Mumbai on September 16 night, and take 1-2 days to reach them, depending on their location.

GTA V is one of the most anticipated game releases of 2013, and is widely expected to be Rockstar Games' biggest cash cow yet. The game, which will initially only be released for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, is priced at Rs. 2,999, with fans having to dish out Rs. 3,999 for the special edition. Those who pre-ordered were offered freebies to sweeten the deal - including a GTA Double-Sided Poster, Metallic V Locket and Atomic Blimp DLC.

Flipkart's email reads: "Please note that due to publisher regulations we are not permitted to start shipping before the evening of September 16th and since we are going to ship the preorders from Mumbai, you will receive the game along with the freebies that were a part of your order - GTA Double-Sided Poster, Metallic V Locket and Atomic Blimp DLC within 1-2 business days post shipping, depending on your geographical location."

The 'delay' of the pre-order GTA V copies by Flipkart has angered a lot of customers, who were hoping to play the game on release day. Many have vowed to stop using Flipkart for pre-ordering games in the future, finding visiting brick and mortar stores to be more advantageous. Some even mentioned that the news has made them cancel all of their other pre-orders from the Indian online retail site. The reactions have also been noted by BGR.in and other media outlets.

The concept of a retail copy pre-order does imply delivery that is before what regular buyers receive, and not much else. Sure, many retailers across the world go out of their way to ensure pre-order customers receive their copies on launch day, especially in the case of high-profile launches, such as GTA V.

To be fair, we can assume that in the case of the Flipkart GTA V pre-order debacle, pre-order buyers will indeed receive their copies ahead of those who order the game on launch day. Of course, those who line-up outside brick and mortar stores for midnight and regular launches, with the requisite time, effort and transportation costs that entails, will end up receiving their copies first, but usually with no freebies. To be noted also is that Flipkart on its game pre-order pages lists the items as 'forthcoming,' and doesn't highlight the precise delivery/shipping date.

Flipkart's cash on delivery option is (quite contradictorily) also extended to pre-orders, almost nullifying the whole pre-order concept of paying for the game in advance. The only disadvantage for pre-order buyers on Flipkart seems to be that they cannot read reviews of the game before making their purchase decision, something that pre-order customers the world over forego. In Flipkart's case, customers are also enticed to pre-order by free DLC and goodies bundled with the game.

India is also not a priority market for game publishers, especially for console games, with the rampant piracy in the market, and the relatively small volumes compared to the US and Europe. However, it's big enough that in most cases nowadays, games are released in the country alongside their global launches, something virtually unheard of in the past, unless one downloaded digital copies from global stores.

Smartphone sensors to control prosthetic limb movements

WASHINGTON: Scientists have developed bio-compatible motion sensors for smartphones, which could be used to control prosthetic limbsand other artificial body parts. 

The technology, called microelectromechanical systems or MEMS, involves components less than 100 microns wide, that is the average diameter of a human hair, Discovery Newsreported. 

In phones, MEMS sensor tells a smart phone if its screen is being held vertically or horizontally by converting signals from the phone's environment, such as its movement, into electrical impulses. 

But the latest version of MEMS sensor, which has been developed with the use of 3D printer to make it more suitable for implantation in the human body, will work in the opposite way, by converting electrical signals into movement.

New Amazon Kindle Fire photo leaked online

NEW DELHI: Amazon may have recently denied rumours of plans to launch a smartphone, but the company is actively working on its next-generation Kindle tablets. An image of the upcoming Kindle Fire tablet has leaked online by Twitter user EVLeaks, who has given many accurate leaks in the past.

The recently leaked image seems to be a press shot of the unannounced device and shows that it will look similar to its predecessor.


However, the device will have evenly-sized bezels on all sides, unlike the current model. It is also not clear if the device is of the 7-inch, or the 8.9-inch variant of the device as had been reported in earlier leaks. The front-facing camera is missing from the device in the photo.

EVLeaks released the photo with the caption "Another upcoming Kindle." It has been reported that Amazon may launch three tablets this year, instead of the two it does every year.

An Amazon tablet recently appeared on GFXBench database, showing that it will run on Android4.2 (Jelly Bean) and have the quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset under the hood. Previous leaks suggest that this model will have 2GB RAM and 8, 16 and 32GB storage options.

Amazon has recently slashed the prices of its tablets in the markets and this is being seen as a clear indication that the new range of tablets would be out soon enough. It is expected that Amazon will launch its new tablets in the last week of September, though the company has not given any confirmation.

Hackers come up with new tricks to attack bank accounts

New Delhi: Delhi police have stumbled upon a new modus operandi of e-banking fraudsters in which they first hack the Internet banking account of the target and then get mobile number blocked to prevent the bank customer from receiving SMS alerts about illegal transactions made by them. In a recent case, two Nigerians were arrested by the staff of South Delhi police for allegedly swindling Rs 70 lakh from the bank account of an NRI based in Japan. Police seized three laptops from them containing banking data of around 1.5 crore people. 

Delhi police have stumbled upon a new modus operandi of e-banking fraudsters During interrogation, the duo told police about the new modus operandi in which hackers first hack data of bank customers from its website which contains the Internet banking ID, passwords, other basic details and the mobile number on which SMS alerts are sent in case of a transaction from the account. "Armed with this information, fraudsters reach retail outlet of the mobile service provider and get the number blocked on the pretext that the SIM along with the mobile handset has been stolen or was lost. "As they already know the name and address of the owner of the mobile number through hacking, they even get a duplicate SIM issued of the same number," said a senior police official. As per police, there have been a number of such cases in the recent past in which transactions worth lakhs were made after getting the number blocked. On August 13, Basanta Kumar, Country Head of Bangladesh of Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) had filed an FIR with the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi police saying that some fraudsters swindled Rs 19,31,000 from his bank account through internet banking after getting his phone number blocked. Criminals have gone a step further after banks started sending SMS alerts to their customers about every transaction and the need of the hour is to devise new methods to counter it, the official said. "Firstly, people should regularly change their Internet banking passwords. We have observed that most of such dubious transactions are made at night and more than one at a time. Banks should change their policy and take note of transactions which take place at odd hours and are dubious in nature," he said. "Banks should ask for alternate mobile number on which a customer can be informed if they detect some suspicious activity from an account such as multiple transactions involving big money or in which money is transferred to foreign accounts," he said
